About Steve
Chief executive officer of SCHEELS, a company his family launched in 1902, Steve started his career at SCHEELS after graduating from high school in 1989. Over his career at SCHEELS, Steve has held positions ranging from part-time shoe stock person, cashier and sales person, to camping buyer, store leader, president and CEO.
SCHEELS began as a small hardware and general merchandise store in Sabin, Minn., and has grown into a company that does business nationally online and has 34 stores in 16 states – including the world’s largest all sports store in Texas.
The company’s culture focuses on customers and employees – something SCHEELS shares with Bell, where Steve has served on the board of directors since 2015. He notes that serving on Bell’s board is a good opportunity for him to learn from the bank and share his perspective on what’s going on in the retail industry.
Steve serves on the Fargo Moorhead Curling Club board, the Hope Lutheran Church council, is a national official and officiating instructor for USA Curling, a scuba instructor with Mick’s Scuba, and serves on the SCHEELS executive committee.
